SA-L11 Messiah of the 70 weeks 1999

THE SECOND ADVENT

THE COMING OF “ONE LIKE THE SON OF MAN”

Letter #11 In The Series

March 1999

The Messiah, or Anointed One

I have been asked to put some thoughts together about the Messiah, or Anointed One, of the literal 70 Weeks. The only problem in this is that the prophesies have a dual application and in talking about one we will talk about both.  To begin let’s go to Genesis chapter three.

And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:  And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:14-15.

These verses say that there are two, one that will have His heel bruised “thou shalt bruise his heel”, this happened when Jesus was willing to go to the cross and die the death of the sinner.  The heel is not a deadly place to have a bruise.  “It (the seed of the woman) shall bruise thy (Satan’s) head”.  The head is a place to have a deadly bruise even if that deadly bruise is later healed.  Most Bible students believe that Jesus is “the seed of the woman”, while there is truth in this application, one must realize that at a certain point in time it will no longer be present truth.  When someone asks you to pass the salt you usually pass them the salt shaker.  The salt shaker contains the salt so in passing it to them you have done exactly as they asked, but until they take the salt out of the container they will not experience the flavor enhancing effect they desire.  Jesus is the fruit of Mary’s womb, and as the fruit contains the seed so Jesus contains the “seed of the woman”.  Jesus the Son of God is the “Word made flesh” and with the help of His Helpmeet, the “free woman” He has a Son who is logically called the “Son of Man”.  This Son is the literal “seed of the woman” and as the Messiah of the literal 70 weeks, (Second Advent) it is He who bruises Satan’s head.

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Isaiah 53:10.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. Isaiah 53:8.

And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. Revelation 12:5.

“Who shall declare his generation?”  Those who declare His generation, or descendants, are those who teach “this Gospel of the kingdom” with Jesus’ Son as the King that rules all nations with His Father, a rod of iron.  Jesus overcame and sat down with His Father on His Throne; Jesus’ Son overcomes and sits down with His Father on His Throne.  The Son of God and the Son of Man ruling together on David’s Throne, the Throne of Judgment.  (See Psalms 122:5)

We see these two, Father and Son, again in Isaiah at the time God gathers His people into the Kingdom.  And there shall come forth a rod (Son of God) out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch (Son of Man) shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child (Son of Man) shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. Isaiah 11:1-12.

In the two Messianic blessings given by Jacob to his sons we find with our new understanding we can see both Messiahs in each blessing.  The first blessing is as follows.  Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.  Genesis 49:8-10.  This blessing revolves around lineage, since the two Messiahs are Father and Son, if one is of the lineage of Judah then so is the other.  In the final analyses though, this blessing (prophecy) points out the Messiah of the literal 70 weeks.

The second messianic blessing was given to his son Joseph.  Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall: The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)  Genesis 49:22-24.  The blessing given to Joseph does not rely so much on lineage but rather it is based more on the storyline of Joseph’s life.  Joseph was sold into slavery, thrown into jail and yet he became second highest ruler in the land and then fed the world.  This blessing (prophecy) more closely points out the Messiah of the prophetic 70 weeks, but we can see Jesus’ Son in this prophecy when we understand the food Jesus feeds the world with, is His flesh (His Son).

Moses was given two tables of stone at two different times.  And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them. Exodus 24:12.  And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. Exodus 32:15-16.  And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.  Exodus 32:19-20.  This word picture is a picture of the Messiah at His first coming. The Messiah was broken for the sins of the people worshipping other gods. The two tablets represent Jesus and His Helpmeet for this reason both stones had all Ten Commandments written on them, the tables were written on both their sides; “on the one side and on the other were they written”. Jesus said “This is my body which is broken for you”, and “This is the cup of the new testament in my blood”. This same picture was seen in Revelation 10 where John was told to eat the little book, this book was all about the Messiah that was broken on behalf of the sinner. The disappointment came because the people thought they had the events all figured out, man’s “strange fire”.

The second set of stones represents the second Messiah, and the second coming.  At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood. And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark. And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me.  And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me. Deuteronomy 10:1-5.  This set of stones Moses (man) was told to hew out and I (God) will write the “words that were in the first tables which thou brakest”. Here we see that God and man worked together thus Jesus as 100% God and 100% human brought forth His Son, the second Messiah. This set of stones were put into the ark, the ark represents His kingdom, the place of safety. (Noah’s ark was also a place of safety).

The next place I would like to go to, is the story of Abraham when God told him to offer Isaac.  In this story there are several things to consider.  1) “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering”.  And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.  Genesis 22:7-8.  2) The other thing to consider is that the ram is the father of a lamb.  God told Abraham not to hurt the promised son so he escaped death.  This also applies to Jesus’ promised Son.  Jesus is represented by the ram for He is the sacrifice that dies and He has a promise of a Son.  And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.  And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.  Genesis 22:11-13.

Hebrews tells us that Abraham and Christ have the same promises, and because of the same promises both offer their Sons.  Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Galatians 3:16.  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Hebrews 11:17.

In the story of Jacob when he was fleeing from home he took a rock for a pillow then after his dream he set it up for a pillar and poured oil on it and said “this is the gate of Heaven”.  He that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.  Revelation 3:12.  Here we see that the one that is represented by the pillar has Jesus’ New Name making him equal to His Father, for He sits on His Father’s throne.  To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.  Revelation 3:21.

In Leviticus 16 we find there are two priests officiating in the Atonement service, the High Priest and later the Son of the High Priest.  At this time Aaron was the High Priest and so it is Aaron’s work that points our attention to the work of Jesus the Messiah of the prophetic 70 weeks, Aaron’s son then would be the one who points our attention to the Messiah of the literal 70 weeks.  The High Priest’s duties are found in verses 3-23, while the Son’s are found in verses 32-33.  Verse 32 reads And the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments: Leviticus 16:32.

John again confirms for us that the overcomer, the one who bruises Satan’s head, is also the one who inherits the estate of His Father the testator.  He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Revelation 21:7.

Now we know that the Messiah of the literal 70 weeks is anointed, receives an inheritance and is My Son.  Zechariah tells us that both Messiahs are Anointed, and in his story of the two olive trees we see that they point our attention to the two “Anointed Messiahs”  Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth. Zechariah 4:11-14.

Daniel 9 tells us that part of what happens is to anoint the most Holy this took place in the prophetic at the baptism of Jesus.  Like Jesus’ anointing came at the beginning of His ministry, His Son’s Anointing will take place in the beginning of His ministry.  Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:24-27.

The Jews had boasted to the Gentiles of His coming, And had dwelt largely upon the great deliverance which He would bring them, that He would reign as king, and put down all authority. Every kingdom and nation would bow to Him, and the Jewish nation would reign over them. They had the events of the first and second coning of Christ confounded together. 4 S. G. p115

Because they had the events of the first and second coming of Christ confounded together they believed that Jesus would take the throne at any time and when He didn’t they could not see that He was the Messiah.  “The promised Son’s” (the Seed of the woman) coming to “inherit” the throne of David is the Second Advent.  The first advent is the suffering servant the Second Advent is the conquering king.  The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.  Genesis 49:10.

The Christian world believes this happened when Jesus came but where is the gathering of the people, where is His kingdom?  It is all in “Symbols”.

In several places Jesus told about this Child.  You see this phrase, “in my name”, has at least two meanings. 1)  Anyone who comes to you teaching in Jesus’ name.  2)  His literal name and in his Family name.

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. Matthew 18:5.  And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. Luke 9:48.  To him that overcometh (child in my name) will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Revelation 3:21.  I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John 5:43.

I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John 6:51.  “My flesh”, using the Bible to tell what that means.  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:24.  These two become one flesh in their child.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. John 12:24.

Here Jesus is saying that He is that “corn of wheat”, seed, and if He dies He does not remain alone.  Like Adam went into that deep sleep and was divided male and female so Jesus too is divided male and female “and they shall be one flesh”.  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Romans 1:20  “The invisible things of him from the creation” God said, let us make man in our image male and female.

He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1 John 5:12-13.

Here it says that to have life we have to believe on the name of the Son of God. This does not only have to do with Jesus as the Son because we are told.  Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 1 John 2:22-25.  The Spirit gave me an understanding of this verse that is different from what I had previously understood.  In this verse I had understood that Jesus was the Son but the Spirit explained since God’s promises are sure and since Jesus is promised a Son just like Abraham, Jesus is referred to here in this verse as Father even before He has a Son.  And so these verses tell us that the antichrist is anyone who denies that Jesus is the Son of God or the Father to the Son of Man.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. John 5:25-27

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6.

Here we see that one of Jesus’ titles is The everlasting Father. Jesus as the creator is the Son of God, when He came to this world He came as the “Word made Flesh” and died as the “Testator”, for He had made ALL the promises.  His Son comes to receive His Father’s will, Covenant promises, and to share with Jesus’ children, sons and daughters.  Those who have been born of the Spirit. These make up His kingdom, those who inherit the Earth.

Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell? Proverbs 30:4.

This verse is talking about the one that we know as Jesus Christ or “the Word made flesh”, the creator. The Law of the “kinsman redeemer” was given so when the lineage that the Message would come through was broken this law made the way of repairing the lineage. This law also was given to make a way of redeeming this world when Adam sinned.  After sin Adam had no righteous heir to rule in his place. Christ, the Second Adam, in the plan of salvation made before sin, had given Himself to be the kinsman to redeem this World. The Son of the “kinsman redeemer” is “Heir” to both the dead father and the live father; and for this reason He inherits the will from both fathers. Adam lost his dominion here on Earth and the Second Adam by right of birth into the human family became the kinsman and bought back the right to rule.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matthew 28:18.

Sin began in Heaven and then moved to Earth, Jesus has all power in both Heaven and Earth so these children, both the heir and the joint-heirs, will fill the vacancy left in both Heaven and Earth due of sin.

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:17.

Here we see that there is a place for all of God’s heirs. What God has for His children is too big for us to understand at this time. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  1 Corinthians 2:9-14.

As you finish reading this letter I hope you can see that the prophecies of the Messiah point out two different advents one in the prophetic and one in the literal.  The prophetic points to the first Advent while the literal application of the same prophecy points to the Second Advent.  Ellen White says Like the tidings of the Saviour’s birth, the message of the second advent was not committed to the religious leaders of the people. They had failed to preserve their connection with God, and had refused light from heaven; therefore they were not of the number described by the apostle Paul: “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.” 1 Thessalonians 5:4, 5.  GC 315.

...The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is again given, with the addition of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time, and joins in the last great work of the third angel’s message, as it swells into a loud cry. And the people of God are fitted up every where to stand in the hour of temptation which they are soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united in the message, and fearlessly proclaimed with great power the third angel’s message.  1SG 193.

The joining of this message is the judgment of the living and takes place with; Graves are opened, and “many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth...awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law...The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the day and hour of Jesus’ coming and delivering the everlasting covenant to His people. Like peals of loudest thunder, His words roll through the earth. The Israel of God stand listening, with their eyes fixed upward. Their countenances are lighted up with His glory, and shine as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai. The wicked cannot look upon them. And when the blessing is pronounced on those who have honored God by keeping His Sabbath holy, there is a mighty shout of victory.  ML 344.

These, “All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified,” Like the ones who were raised with Jesus to work in the judgment of the dead so these come forth to join in the judgment of the living. This resurrection is the same as, And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.  Daniel 12:1-3.

The seven thunders of Revelation 10 begin with God speaking the day and hour of His coming. God speaking during the first coming is the type for His speaking (thunderings) during the second coming.

This joining of the dead (All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message) with the living; their message swells to the loud cry of the third angel’s message. This message tells how the Son of God offered Himself to become the Second Adam and bring forth a “Righteous Harvest” and thus fulfill the prophecy, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:28, replenish the earth with righteous people and He begins with one from His own bowels.  “This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. Genesis 15:4.

Whether we like it or not God’s plan is going to be fulfilled the way He has planned it.

Yours to give the message of the prophetic and the literal,
